A Vacation of Personal Growth at Hollyhock Holistic Retreat Center, For an Average of $100 A Day, All Inclusive
Here's a prescription for "summer fun in the sun" but with a twist: a week at Canada's popular Hollyhock, where instead of baking on the beach, you'll feed your soul with a variety of enriching workshops (and you can still enjoy some quality tanning time, as the center is located in beautiful British Columbia with the sea and a nice beach right out back). Hollyhock, which began its season last week, is offering 81 widely varied courses from now until late October, all of which are open to the general public and all of which are eminently affordable. On average, the workshops run U.S.D. $55 per day (often less), and tent accommodations including all three "gourmet vegetarian" meals a day are only $49 per day. For those who insist on sleeping inside, a dormitory room (including all meals and sleeping 3 to 6) is $63 per person, and a double with shared bath and full meal plan starts at $77 (with private bath the cost is $91 and single rooms start at $98). Some examples of upcoming workshops include: "T'ai Chi Ch'uan with Judith O. Weaver (July 19 through July 25): T'ai Chi Ch'uan is a traditional Chinese discipline, known for enhancing relaxation, coordination, health, well-being and longevity. Judyth Weaver, a seasoned T'ai Chi teacher with extensive training in Reichan and other somatic therapies, will teach the first section of the short Yang form, placing special emphasis on helping students understand the philosophy and principals of this art. Days will begin with practice on the beach and will include time to discuss practical applications of T'ai Chi and the various ways it can help us improve our lives. 6 nights C$465 (USD $313.96)." "Introduction to Massage with Fiona Walker (June 7 through June 12): What a wonderful way to spend time--learning to give a relaxing and healing massage. This is a beginning level course which teaches a complete full-body massage sequence appropriate for individuals or couples, parents, caregivers or professionals wishing to augment a holistic health career. The course combines technical skills in massage and self-care with an exploration of your creative power and intuition. Concepts of energy work will also be introduced. 5 nights C$395 (USD $266.67)." "Writing Your Life with Sharon Butala (August 12 through August 17): Telling your story, or significant parts of it, is a necessary endeavor for the growth of your soul. The first and last step is locating your own true voice---the inner one that speaks softly behind the noise of daily life or obliquely in dreams, the one that refuses to be silenced as you grow older. How do you find that one true voice? Sharon Butala, an established and successful Canadian writer, will help you transmute the material of life into literature--the autobiographical sketch, the personal essay, the memoir. 5 nights C$425 (USD $286.93)." "Family Nature Retreat with Dayna Davis and Barry Perrin (August 7 through August 12): Come as a family to Hollyhock to deepen your connection with each other and the earth. Nature--our wise and ancient teacher--is calling us to renew our appreciation for her beauty, stillness and wisdom, and to see her once again with childlike wonder and respect. Your adventurous week will include a wide range of outdoor activities: nature awareness games, wilderness survival skills (orienteering, firemaking, wildcrafting, and shelter building), basketmaking and other natural crafts. We'll also share in storytelling, music, circle dancing and celebratory rituals of Mother Earth. There will be several children only sessions, giving parents the opportunity to take time alone or together. Tuition: 5 nights for C$275 ($185.69) first adult, C$135 (USD $91.25)for each additional adult, C$75 (USD $50.69) for each child age 4-12." It's not necessary to take a workshop to enjoy Hollyhock. Many book a week there simply to stroll through its woodland trails, kayak in the ocean or take massages at Hollyhocks "healing arts studio." In addition, there are daily yoga and meditation sessions open to all and a resident naturalist on hand to lead hikes, birding walks and stargazing sessions. For more information, either call Hollyhock at 800/933-6339 (250/935-6576 outside North America) or visit their handsome Web site at www.hollyhock.bc.ca.
