Meguro Community Fest

Late Summer 1998

Festival - Meguro Newspaper Surprise!

Enjoying Our Local Festival

We read about this festival in the local newspaper for foreigners and decided it would be fun to drop by.

We didn't get moving that early, so it was 4pm by the time we arrived at the festival. As soon as we walked into the sports field where the festival was being held, two Japanese guys ran up to us and said in English "here, here, here, come, come, come" and started dragging Seth away. We didn't know what was up, so we followed.

Next thing you know, we were given a big two handled saw and started sawing (as fast as we could) off a piece of log.

We sawed through the log in 39 seconds. Tara had a rough time since she kept being pulled back and forth back and forth as Seth sawed pulled his saw back and forth and back and forth. The whole time we were sawing, there were lots of people, including kids, standing around and urging us on.

Now, this "saw through the log" community game is NOT one you could do in America - someone could get hurt! But, here in Tokyo it was just fine for a kid to be sitting 5 inches from where we were sawing on the log. It was a fun introduction to the festival.

After claiming our souvenir log, we walked around the rest of the field. Most of the booths were cleaning up since the festival was nearly over. Even so, we caught the tail end of the main stage dancing entertainment and had a great time!

Meguro Newspaper Surprise

We picked up the same local newspaper for foreigners a year later and what a surprise... there we were sawing away.
