Platform Fireworks

August 8, 1999

We really wanted to go see a fireworks display again this year since they were so spectacular the year before in Yokohama. We chose a location out of the Tokyo Classified and headed across town. We thought we had left home with enough time to spare, but somehow we arrived just as the fireworks were scheduled to start. As we were walking along the train platform, we could see the hoards of people on the shopping street below walking towards the fireworks. The train platform was also crowded.

Seth suggested that we hang back from the crowd and let everyone else on the platform pass. As we were waiting, we saw our first fireworks. The view from the platform was fine. We then noticed some guide ropes and train personnel standing on the platform itself. Just a few people had gathered behind the guide rope. We decided to avoid the crown all together and watch the fireworks from the platform. It was a good choice!

We could see the fireworks just fine for the next hour - except for every three minutes or so when a train would arrive! We actually could see the fireworks through the train window once the train stopped, but the view was totally obstructed as the trains passed in front of us. As the fireworks display continued, more and more people were gathering on the platform to watch. We were all seated very orderly behind the guide rope. It was a really memorable experience!

We were among the first to leave also when the display was over so you can see many people still on the platform behind the guide ropes. As we pulled away in the train, we could see a few final fireworks from the display we had watched, plus a whole other display on the other side of a big river the train was crossing. Japanese fireworks sure are better than those in America!
