Zen Shiatsu Massage

August 22 (??), 1999 & when Seth's parents visited end of Oct.

We read about Mr. Suzuki's Zen Shiatsu shop in our "Little Adventures in Tokyo" book. We really wanted to give it a try so Tara, feeling brave one day, called up and made us an appointment - 100% in Japanese.

As she understood it, we had an appointment the following Saturday.

We set out early in the morning since we were headed all the way across town and then some. The journey was actually pretty interesting since we switched from a subway line to a JR line to a subway line without having to cross ticket barriers. At the end, our subway stored value ticket card wouldn't let us out the gates, so we had to visit a station attendant and sort out the fare.

We arrived with about 15 minutes to spare but couldn't find the shop on the street described in the book. Of course, buildings in Tokyo are not numbered sequentially, so the address we had did not good once we found the correct block of buildings. Tara finally inquired at a fruit stand and we were directed right back the way we'd come. We had walked right by this big sign for the Shiatsu shop.

Our massages were very enjoyable and very different from other massages we've had.

- the room consisted of an entryway and changing room plus a curtained off area with about six futons on the floor
- we were instructed with hand signals and a bit of English to each lie on one of these futons
- the pillows were small, hard, rice filled pillows
- there were two people who massaged us: Mr. Shiatsu and a lady assistant

Afterwards, Seth could barely move because he felt so relaxed.

We enjoyed our massages so much that we decided to treat Seth's parents to the experience while they were visiting us in Tokyo.

The big surprise this time was that we found a toy shop selling Doraemon just across the street. Tara bought a pair of ear-muffs and a muffler that she hadn't seen anywhere else before.
